Our online backups provide you with simple, convenient recovery from many of life's little accidents.
Online Backups
Zone backups are a chargeable service, as described in our Extras tariff. Backups are taken every night between 0200 and 0400 GMT, (or BST, as applicable). We take backups from snapshots of your zone's filesystems, so they're more likely to be consistent, even without stopping services within your zone. Backups are incremental, in three tiers:
| 6 x level 2 "daily" backups, Monday - Saturday |
| 3 x level 1 "weekly" backups, every Sunday except |
| 2 x level 0 "full" backups, every fourth Sunday |
All of these backups are available to you over NFS, from within your zone, under /backups. You can use ufsrestore to retrieve files from backup interactively like so:
ufsrestore if /backups/DAILY20060304031319

Physical Backups
For further security, we can supply you with backups of your zone's filesystem on DVD media, at a cost of £2 per DVD plus £4 handling.
Partial backups
We back up on a per-filesystem basis. If you wish to back up only part of your zone's data, you'll need two filesystems - one that we back up, one that we don't. As an example, you might buy an extra 2GB of disc space as a separate filesystem for your static web pages - which we could mount under /data, which might be unprotected by backup - and then pay only to back up the 1GB root filesystem, keeping all of your email, logs and configuration safe from accidental deletion.
